Mannix is pleased to learn that Hudson likes her verses. She inquires if Hudson has seen a story presently being published by Lippincott's, which she thinks is either the slipshod work of either Maurice Francis Egan or Thomas Galwey . "Midshipman Bob" is a good story. She describes her family to Hudson. In the last number of the Advocate there is a story from the Ave Maria. :: X-3-b A.L.S. 6pp. 12mo.

Mannix hopes that she can induce her husband to accept Hudson's invitation during the vacation. Scope and Contents Mannix comments adversely on the books Hudson sent for her to review. Mannix thinks the installments of Miss Fisher's story are too short, while she does not care for "Palms". She is glad to hear that Thomas F. Galwey is having better luck in his literary work. Mrs. Galwey is there with her sister Mrs. Disney . Maurice Francis Egan should be shown the bad taste of his chats on books. Miss Margaret McCabe has agreed to Mannix's suggestion that they should pay fifty dollars for articles...

 Item — Box CHUD 11
Identifier: CHUD X-3-g
Scope and Contents Mannix does not think that Hudson ought to have sent her any money for those verses. A rich man in Cincinnati who has known her since she was born told her that if he could serve her in any way she should let him know. Her husband has said in various letters that if they had a home of their own they could get along nicely out there. Rents are exceedingly high. She wrote to this widely known philanthopist asking if he would lend her $2,500. The gentleman replied that he could not loan...

Scope and Contents Among the many things which Mannix admires about Hudson is his frankness. Mannix refers to Hudson's recommendation to destroy her story "Kitty's Piano", which she has not carried out. She sends some French sketches which she has translated together with a Christmas story of Southern California. Her story "A Tale of Two Coasts" is taking shape. She has been honorably mentioned in the Magazine of Poetry. Hudson's new story is very strong and she has read nothing better in a long time....

Mannix submits a New Year story. Did Mannix write Hudson that Mr. Galwey was about to take a chair at the new University? She considers him a better writer than Egan. What does Hudson think of the conduct of President Benjamin Harrison and Premier at the dedication of the Catholic University ? Brother John Regis Heim visited her last week. John is strongly inclined to Annopolis. There is good news from their "gold mines." :: X-3-k A.L.S. 10pp. 16mo.

Mannix submits a correction. She will have some translations from the Spanish for Hudson shortly. She should not like to think that Christian Reid Frances C. Tiernan was like that. Mannix has a friend who said Miss Fisher's family thought her eccentric. :: X-3-k A.L.S. 3pp. 16mo.

Scope and Contents Mannix sends the second installment of her story. Mannix thinks that she and Maurice Francis Egan could write a novel together. If he had not treated her so strangely whe might try to bring this about. T. F. Galwey and Mannix once tried to write a play together but Galwey's ideas were too strained and sentimental. She inquires if "Laurence Minot" is a genuine name. Mannix intends to send to Benziger Brothers for a photograph of Father Joseph Damien De Veuster; she has read that he was...

John Mannix writes that the rumor in Washington is that James G. Blaine will resign. People familiar with administrative affairs say he and the President do not work together. Scope and Contents One needs to assert oneself as to religion and nationality here. Many are Catholics in name only and ashamed of being Irish. Mannix knows a Miles Galligan, who appropriated building association funds in Cincinnati. John B. Mannix advanced the money and got him a job in a railroad depot. He left his situation after paying little more than half the debt. Scope and Contents Mannix has just thought of something for the beginning of May. She thinks it ought to go before the article she sent this morning. "A Tale of Two Coasts" is taking shape in her mind. A visiting priest applied with a letter from Bishop Francis Mora for permission to say Mass in San Diego. Someone who know him elsewhere saw him at the altar and told Father Anthony Uback he was a silenced priest. He denied the charge, but when Uback wrote to his former bishop, he learned the charge was...

Scope and Contents Maurice Francis Egan should write a novellette for Lippincott's. Although she considers herself ill treated by Egan, she appreciates his able talents and uncompromising Catholicity. Aubrey de Vere seems to be a poet of the intellect only. He must have taken it amiss that so far the prizes have been awarded over his head by the Magazine of Poetry. He did receive honorable mention. Mannix did not try for the prize, but she sent two "Rondeaux". Hudson is right, it is not much wonder that...

Mannix and her husband went to Los Angeles last Saturday. They stopped at St. Vincent's which is under charge of the Lazarist fathers. They called on Bishop Francis Mora and saw Father Joachim Adam. They went up to Pasadena, a spot settled by wealthy Easterners who came there for their health. The priest of whom...

When reading the Marian German poets of the Middle Ages in the Ave Maria Mannix missed much and thought Hudson may have omitted a portion. Scope and Contents Mannix is sorry about the Golden Jubilee article, which she has sent to the Catholic World. Hudson must have forgotten what he wrote in reply to her question as to what space he could give her. The sisters wanted the article to appear in the Ave Maria, but when they heard Hudson could give them only four pages they requested Mannix to send them to the Catholic World. Mannix presumes that religious women are very unreasonable. There is nothing the matter with Mannix but anxiety as to the...
