Mannix, Mary E., San Diego, California, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1890 November 18

 Item — Box: CHUD 15
Identifier: CHUD X-3-l

Scope and Contents

Mannix is sorry about the Golden Jubilee article, which she has sent to the Catholic World. Hudson must have forgotten what he wrote in reply to her question as to what space he could give her. The sisters wanted the article to appear in the Ave Maria, but when they heard Hudson could give them only four pages they requested Mannix to send them to the Catholic World. Mannix presumes that religious women are very unreasonable. There is nothing the matter with Mannix but anxiety as to the future and solicitude as to how she will meet everyday expenses. Formerly all that her husband touched prospered. Now it appears to be just the contrary. She wishes there were more writers like Christian Reid. Mr. Egan's tribute to John Boyle O'Reilly was very good. O'Reilly was a wonderful, many-sided man. Mannix is always glad to meet Charles Warren Stoddard in the Ave Maria. Father John Talbot Smith has talent but he is unpolished and not devoid of conceit. Has it ever occurred to Hudson in view of the "Americani sm" that is creeping into high places that there may be a schism or secession in the Church in the United States? Dr. Richard Lalor Burtsell has gone to Rondout at last. Father Thomas J. Ducey has been making himself prominent in an unenviable way. One of Dr. Burtsell's nieces is a friend of Mannix. She deplores his action with regard to Father Edward McGlynn. Burtsell knows McGlynn to have been wrong in many respects and to have been wronged in others. :: X-3-l A.L.S. 6pp. 12mo.
