He encloses a letter from his friend and benefactor of the American College in Louvain . He asks Lefevere to send him a few lines, and DeNeve will pay all expense; he asks a few lines to George Schwarz recommending the college. They have retreat on Aug. 9, ordinations at Mechlin on the 16th and 17th. Bishop Modeste Demers has been with them for a week, and Bishop Martin John Spalding for 2 days; he is now with Father James Pulsers at Haaren. Enclosure:

He has at the American College at Louvain an excellent young man, P. J. De Smedt, a subdeacon of Bruges. There is doubt whether he belongs to Bruges or to Detroit. De Neve asks for an ineat or exeat. Father August J. Lambert will sail from Antwerp tomorrow. Father Matthew H. Schaeken will come out in August. He is an excellent subject in talents, student, music, temper, etc., but not old as yet. DeNeve thanks McFarland for his letter of February 22, and by it he is authorized to submit the seminarians of McFarland to the Archbishop of Mechlin for ordination, but he also must have power to adopt these men into the diocese of Hartford. He also must have power from McFarland to admit them from the other dioceses into the Hartford diocese. It is strange that from the study of his verse one can hit upon the inherited characteristics of de Vere.
