He received Mesnard's letter of the 12th. The propositions about the land are unacceptable; Mesnard asks 4 years of credit and wants to give only $4000 while Father Victor Jamey offers $5000. Mesnard can have it for $4500 at 4 years. Bishop Blanc, to whom Izard talked through St. Aubin, will give it and Izard's sister-in-law as well as his brothers-in-law will sell under those conditions. Although she has not heard from Edwards in two months, she thinks and prays for him with all the fervor of her heart. Father General Edward Sorin, C.S.C. arrived home very tired. Bishop John J. Keane arrived at Notre Dame looking well; he said he many times wished himself back at Notre Dame. Today he received the letter of Purcell with the news of Bishop Ignatus Mrak's appointment. He hopes he will accept and make no delay in taking possession of his see. Jacker will be unable to attend the consecration because of difficulty and expense of travelling in winter. He cannot leave his missions unattended. The 1868 allocation of 1,600 francs arrived from Paris but not the balance for 1867. He fears that the draft was sent and went into the wrong hands. :: II-5-d A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.
