Baart left a written instruction to his administrator that all his papers and library except such books wanted by the administrator, go to Notre Dame University. He expects to have quite a cargo for Memorial Hall some day. Bishop John S. Foley is desirious of useing his brother's crozier. If Edwards agrees, they could inscribe it as the gift of Bishop J. McMullen to Memorial Hall and loaned to Bishop Foley during his life-time. The wooden cross with chain belonged to Bishop Frederick Baraga. Father Sieffrath showed the Bishop a cross he had just purchased. When the Bishop took a fancy to the cross, they exchanged crosses and Father Sieffrath wore Baraga's cross constantly during his life. He gave it to O' Brien before his death. :: XI-2-k L.S. The silver cross and chain was given by Bishop Joseph Rosati to Bishop John Lefevre de Cheverus at the time of his consecration. His early photographs show that he wore this cross. It remained in the Diocesan treasury at Detroit until 1877 when Bishop Casper Henry Borgess gave it to O'Brien. The chain was longer, but a watch chain was taken from it and its whereabouts is now unknown. Bishop Lefevre said that the cross belonged to a saintly Bishop. :: XI-2-k L.S.(Typed) 1p.
