His case developed into serious pleurisy. For six weeks he had a tube in his side to draw off the fluid. The trip home was a hard one and he has been in bed ever since he got there. The doctors want to remove a portion of three of his ribs. Should he have the operation he wouldn't be able to write for some time. He was tickled to get Edwards' postal. He wondered why Edwards didn't write during the time he was sick. The doctor says he can't go back to Madison this fall. He was worried to hear that Edwards was at West Baden. Edwards needs a trip to California; it would do him good. He expects to have a good time during the Fiesta. President McKinley's being there makes it a banner attraction. The Notre Dame baseball team seems to be doing well. He has been very busy getting started and felt lonesome for his N.D. friends. He came to the University of Wisconsin on account of his work, agriculture chemistry, not on account of discipline. He saw by the papers that Notre Dame gave Michigan a horrible defeat. Wisconsin expects a hard contest with Notre Dame. He will do all he can to make it pleasant for the team while there. The doctors drained about 6� quarts of liquid that had pressed about his heart. He was in serious condition but was ignorant of the fact. The doctor is elated over the way he is improving. One never has a dull moment in Los Angeles. The town is simply packed with tourists. He was sorry to hear that Col Hoynes was sick.
