Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister Elizabeth, Torresdale, Pennsylvania, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 September 16
Scope and Contents
The loss of their convent by fire was a shock to the entire community. Their friends have been generous with aid. The Misses Drexel sent $10,000 and Mr. Hickey says the Mother House sent a similar sum. One anonymous donor sent nine thousand dollars, while F. O'Brien and Mr. Farren of philadelphia gave one thousand dollars apiece. Archbishop Michael Corrigan and Father John Scully, S.J. each sent five hundred dollars. What was most touching were the offers of meat and groceries made by the butcher and grocer. Plans are being made to build a new convent, in the mean time, classes will be conducted in Mr. Ottendorfer's mansion through Mr. Weigenfeldt . They have four cottages on the Mountain, one was part of the Lorillard Estate, that was purchased for $80,000 in 1849. The Lorillard Cottage will be for the free school. During the forty years the House has kept the two parochial schools of Fathers F. Griffin and Anthony Kesseler, free of a farthing of expense. Lately, Kesseler, who is very nationalistic, got some Dominicans to take charge of his children and now they are discharged for Milwaukee Sisters. She has heard that Charles Warren Stoddard has apostatized. Sister is afraid she will never again see the Freeman's-Journal, for a friend sent it to them, but now it has changed owners. She cannot understand what difference the politics of a Christian newspaper makes; she would not be a Democrat, yet she likes to read the Freeman's Journal. Although she never thought about this topic until she saw a tirade in the News on this subject. Strange, to be a good Catholic one must be a Democrat. :: X-3-h A.L.S. 8pp. 12mo. 13
