Brother Ferdinand Patrick Neeson C.S.C. requested she send the accompanying article written by her brother Andrew A. Egan, a native of Baltimore and a graduate of Loyola College. Joining the Confederate Army at the beginning of the Civil War, Egan was seriously wounded in the battle of Manassas. He was taken to the Catholic Church at Warrenton, Virginia, and placed in a cot opposite a picture of the Madonna and there wrote the enclosed verses. No enclosure :: X-3-k A.L.S. 3pp. 16mo.

Egan is in despair because the press of commitments had caused him to become careless in the stories he has turned out. James McMaster and he have discussed the situation and they have agreed on an arrangement at New York Freeman's-Journal. Father John A. Zahm, C.S.C. gave Egan an account of Hudson. Egan wishes to have a copy of Maurice de Guerin's poem and the poem "A Garden of Roses". The Ave Maria is becoming more attractive and Stoddard is a great attraction. Egan will notice "A Child of Mary". He asks payment for all the articles he writes for the Ave Maria because he needs the money to publish a book of poems which he hopes will make some profits for Notre Dame. The Scholastic's remarks about his sketches in the "Guardian Angel" not being the things for children are quite right, and he profits by their kind criticism. He has not enough courage to gather anything for Notre Dame but wonders if it would be of any use to bring out a small volume of his religious poems for the benefit of the college.
