She is rather disappointed in the subject that Father wants her to write for the Ave Maria. She would like to write a few columns in the magazine of some special book reviews that she has on hand. Scope and Contents Since he is called the Mentor of the Catholic Press in America, she addresses him in that capacity and offers her suggestions as to how the Catholic Press could be made more effective and influential. She thinks that women should be given a place in the editorial field because they could handle the small details leaving the men free to work on the important tasks. She commends this idea to his judgment, and if he finds it acceptable she would be glad to be a contributor. :: I-2-a A.L.S....

Meany, Mary L., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1879 July 2

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-e
Scope and Contents She is beginning to translate St. Anne of Auray. She will do the whole of it and send it to Hudson early in the fall as she is sure he would be pleased more with it that way than extracts from it at the present. About the reviews, she keeps to her bargain. Even though Hudson refused her favor of paying her in advance he paid her $30 out of $50 she wanted. She will send him a long or short review of every book he wishes from time to time. She has her own reasons for wanting just this...

Meany, Mary L., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1879 August 12

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-e
Scope and Contents She waited until Hudson should not be too busy before she bothered him with a long letter, but the Ave Maria brought such great news of Notre Dame that she could not wait. She hopes Our Lady has given Hudson better health. It is very unpleasant to be misunderstood and especially by a priest. The reasons Hudson gave for refusing her request were not good ones, even though he thought so. He has said so many similar applications, but she states that if the Ave Maria is the Blessed Virgin's...

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-e
Scope and Contents She has forgotten if Hudson wanted a complete translation or only the chapters relating to the pilgrimage so she is sending the first page of the translation of St. Anne. She disagrees with Hudson with references to the religious giving an example of charity. He says that Notre Dame has not failed in being charitable, but she claims that giving charity and giving an example of charity are two different things. If the religious would give charity openly instead of secretly it would set a...

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-f
Scope and Contents Hudson would be overwhelmed if he had received all the letters that have been started to him but never finished. Our Lady's feast brought her no consolation, but she remembered a promise made to St. Joseph, that she would write articles for his month. Now she can answer Hudson's suggestion about the Reverend Mother at St. Mary's. When Miss Meany had been advised to write to Father Gillespie about the Order, he was ill. She would have written to Mother Angela, C.S.C. at the time had she...

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-f
Scope and Contents Enclosed is another of the series of industrial stories. Hudson over paid her for "Barbara's Lesson". Will Hudson take the whole series? The first tale was not altogether suited for youthful readers. Her idea of children's reading is something that will expand their faculties. There is much frivolity in the best Catholic families. Some influence is needed to keep up the tone of baptized children. Miss Meany is glad Hudson liked "Our Lady of Miracles". If Hudson approves of it she will...

She compliments Father Hudson in that he is not materialistic like many people of this era are. She recommends Miss Eliza Allen Starr's article entitled "The Glorification of the Passion".
