The headstone to McFarland's brothers was erected in September but McCollum did not have an opportunity to see it. It is of durable stone and inscribed as McFarland directed. It cost $90 because it had to be brought to Waynesboro. He got no receipt but will demand it, if it is needed. He sends a check for $10, the balance. His son Francis X. McCollum has been a student at Notre Dame for the past two years and expected to graduate next year, but he informs him that it depends upon what Edwards says in that respect. He has a large family to educate and cannot afford to pay for another year. He has wealthy Protestant relatives who would educate his boys if he would allow them to select the institution but his conscience forbids him to do this. He asked Archbishop James F. Wood about the Roman Burses. His impression is that the Cincinnati Diocese has two, one made up by Father Stahle and the other consisting of five $1000 subscriptions. The annual interest on both has been sent to Father Silas M. Chatard. It has been Chatard's custom to notify the Bishops when their remittance has been received.
