Stoddard submits some lines which he composed while aboard the yacht Norna. The letters Hudson mentioned as being sent to the Highlands, were delivered to him by Theodore Vail. Stoddard spent Saturday at Nahant with William Dean Howells. They had a most pleasant meeting. Howells talked Stoddard into beginning his novel without delay. Stoddard thanks Hudson for the picture. Theodore Vail has fine taste. He would like to see Hudson's brother and Doctor Dunn. One of the three ladies visiting here is an interesting American girl, who was born in Brazil, studied at a Paris convent and then attended Vassar to learn English. If Rene, Hudson, Father John, and Gregori were in a monastery, it would not be long before Hudson would find Stoddard begging for admittance. :: X-3-g A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.

Stoddard has had a touch of malaria. Yesterday he was in Cambridge on Brattle Street just above Longfellows, and today he visited Faneuil Hall, the old State House, and the Bunker Hill monument. Stoddard tells Hudson to send him no money but to keep it for a later date. Hudson's brother called on Stoddard while he was down-east, he was sorry to have missed him.
