Seymour, Mary Alice, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1883 May 10

 Item — Box CHUD 5
Identifier: CHUD X-2-k
Scope and Contents

Seymour has done her best to condense her two chapters into one, but finds that it cannot be done. Since Fra Angelico is the prominent Catholic painter of the XV century, she has dealt primarily with him. The trouble with Catholics in America is that they do not take an interest in Catholic art and literature. It may be that Mr. Galwey is correct, when he says he does not need articles on art, for people go to Protestants for this kind of reading. :: X-2-k A.L.S. 2pp. 12mo.

 Item — Box CHUD 5
Identifier: CHUD X-2-j
Scope and Contents Hudson's kindness in sending her several articles in the Ave Maria should have been acknowledged long ago. Grandma has come back to live but her mind is so impaired that she was moved to her married sister's for better care. She herself is "floating about" among her friends, hoping to find a job as a teacher. Her relatives, being Protestants, blame her misfortunes on her becoming a Catholic. Today Father Jordan and other "Fathers" of hers begin a Novena to St. Joseph that a good...

Shahan, Father Thomas H., Taunton, Massachusetts, to Bishop Francis P. McFarland of, Hartford, Connecticut, 1871 March 5

 Item
Identifier: CDHT I-1-c
Scope and Contents McFarland's letter saying that Edith O'Gorman had been attacked in Taunton by a crowd of 1000 led by a priest was received. The statement is false. Priests do not lead mobs in Taunton. She was hissed by men and boys who gathered to see her. Before the end of the lecture Catholics had been cleared from the streets by the priests. They policed the crowd because there was rumor that there would be a disturbance which might have been planned by her or her partner Phillips. Shahan had stationed...
