Shahan, Father Thomas H., Taunton, Massachusetts, to Bishop Francis P. McFarland of, Hartford, Connecticut, 1871 March 5

 Item
Identifier: CDHT I-1-c

Scope and Contents

McFarland's letter saying that Edith O'Gorman had been attacked in Taunton by a crowd of 1000 led by a priest was received. The statement is false. Priests do not lead mobs in Taunton. She was hissed by men and boys who gathered to see her. Before the end of the lecture Catholics had been cleared from the streets by the priests. They policed the crowd because there was rumor that there would be a disturbance which might have been planned by her or her partner Phillips. Shahan had stationed himself at the door of the hall to prevent Catholics from entering. Of course this prevented her from having a full house and caused her to make up her story about the 1000 attacking a little woman. :: I-1-c A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
