 Item — Box CEDW 11: [Barcode: 00000039181839], Folder: 16
Identifier: CEDW XI-2-f
Scope and Contents He was deeply touched by Edwards' kind words of sympathy and the prayers of Notre Dame for the respose of the soul of his dear wife. In the hour of sorrow nothing else satisfies the yearnings of the heart as the consolations which religion brings. He was pleased with the selection of Charles J. Bonaparte for the Laetare Medal. He is trying to arrange for the unveiling of Brownson Monument in the fall. He intends to suggest that the centenary of Brownson Sept. 16th be observed throughout the...

 Item — Box CEDW 12: [Barcode: 00000039181847], Folder: 08
Identifier: CEDW XI-2-g
Scope and Contents

He never spent four days more pleasantly and was never more royally treated than during his recent visit to Notre Dame. He was deeply impressed with all he saw. His mission to St. Louis was not successful. Archbishop John J. Glennon was cold and indifferent to the proposal of a Catholic Congress and Archbishop John Ireland was opposed to it. Cardinal James Gibbons is in favor of the idea but will not sanction it as so many of the bishops are opposed to it. :: XI-2-g A.L.S. 4pp.

Hart, Father Matthew, College de Juilly, Damartin, Seine et Marne, France, to Bishop Francis P. McFarland of Hartford, Providence, Rhode Island, 1862 January 3

 Item
Identifier: CDHT I-1-b
Scope and Contents Hart received the Bishop's letter on New Year's day. He is sorry to learn that the Bishop has a bad cold. The wants of the diocese lead him to return to the diocese as soon as the weather permits. He has thought that of Chester and Branford missions, Branford and the places on the railroad should be annexed to St. Patrick's and Chester with all the Haddams to Middletown or Colchester. Little schools could be instituted at Branford and Chester by the revenue which is too small to support a...

 Item
Identifier: CDHT I-1-b
Scope and Contents The story of the coming Council after Pentecost is more than rumor. All the Bishops have received an invitation to the canonization of the Japanese martyrs at Pentecost. It is not openly said that there will be a Council but it is believed that the occasion will be used for one. It is rumored that the French ambassador has objected and said that if it is held the French troops will be withdrawn. The Nuncio has not left Rome for Paris. Hart has received a letter from Dr. Bernard Smith that...

Hart hoped to see the Bishop in Europe where he thinks he could do the diocese some good besides attending the canonization of the Japanese martyrs. The Emperor prevents the French bishops from attending as Victor Emmanuel does the Italian. He would not care to have severe sickness at Juilly because of its isolation. He met his friend Father...

Identifier: CVIN IV-3-i
Scope and Contents

Mrs. Meagher Ellen Maher? has perused James O'Hara's letter and thinks his offer very ungenerous. Hase thinks so likewise. If he had offered 2 or 3 hundred dollars Hase would have advised her to agree but not on these terms. O'Hara must have forgotten his half-brother whom she has maintained and clothed for several years. $50 would not compensate her for that. :: IV-3-i A.L.S. 2pp. 4to.
