By his son Charles Augustus Davis, Davis sends $50 toward tuition and boarding. Charles has been detained longer than anticipated, on account of having his clothes made. Since his arrival here Davis has been advised that his son had better return home until the sickly season has passed. Davis, with Timon's permission, would prefer that his son go home until the commencement of the next session. His plan has been to permit his son to remain at school at the Seminary for four years if his progress justified it. As Davis will probably leave here today, he writes relative to his son becoming a student at St. Mary's Seminary. The terms are too high; he is willing to give $100 per annum for board and tuition for Charles Davis. Day, sanitary superintendent for the New York Health Department, finds no complaint against the premises McMaster mentioned, ever since 1882 when the Board, on the recommendation of the Inspector ordered the business of rendering lard discontinued. He has received the bishop's letter of the 8th and cannot understand the grave insinuations it contains. He refers to his own bishop's Francis P. McFarland letter to Borgess and his former letter asking to permit Father P.J. De Smedt to remain with him as his assistant; now he wishes he had never come this way. He is a pious and zealous priest and he expects to leave for Detroit the next week. :: III-2-l A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.

He has searched in vain for a purple biretta and cassock of Bishop Mathias Loras of Dubuque, Iowa. He will write to Newark where he must have left it in packing. All he has of any value of the Bishop is a fine gold watch which De Cailly has been using for the last 29 years. He sends his faculties signes by Loras. P.S. Mr. Newton, a prominent lawyer of Flint, a warm friend of Catholics, a brother-in-law of Governor Fenton, wishes to place his 5½ year old daughter, abandoned by her mother, with the Ladies of the Sacred Heart in Detroit, not so much to learn, as to be brought up a Christian, safe and secure from her mother's influence. Her parents had left property to her and her brother, Father Charles L. De Ceuninck; the latter is willing to share the property, but she thinks there is more property than her brother speaks of. Forbidden to sue in court, she asks Lefevere to bring the case before an ecclesiastical court to obtain justice.
