French, Father S J., Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1883 January 29

 Item — Box CHUD 5
Identifier: CHUD X-2-k
Scope and Contents It is a long time since any letters have passed between the, but he is now in a region where he hopes they may meet next spring or summer. He writes, trusting that Hudson is still at Notre Dame. For the past two years he has been very near the "border land". A serious illness compelled him to leave his work on Lake Superior. The last part of the past two years was spent in Cleveland. However, last fall he was able to begin again in a mild way and took work in this country town where he...

French, Rev. S. J., Houghton, L. I., Michigan, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, CSC, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1879 October 12

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-e
Scope and Contents He has been reminded of Hudson's neglected letter by the receiving of the Catholic World. The reason for the delay was because he was without a writing table, was moving into his present house and was busy overseeing the work of the decorators. Then the Bishop visited him and he accompanied the Bishop to the next town. He is waiting to hear from Perkins on the Pacific slope as he has not his address at his new location. In reply to Hudson's request, he does not think much of Father...

French, Rev. S. J., Houghton, Michigan, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1879 March 15

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-e
Scope and Contents French found Hudson's letter and package awaiting him when he arrived at his semipolar home. He is looking for the crucifix and tells Hudson that the best way to send packages is by mail and that express is very expensive to that remote place. He almost wishes that Hudson was a victim of hay fever so he could compel him to seek the same climate as he. The commercial world is indebted to the Jesuits for the discovery of that copper region. It would be a pleasure to show Hudson around...

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-e
Scope and Contents French has just returned from his last sermon and thinks of the quiet retreat where Hudson is keeping his Holy Day. He believes that Holy Week brings us closer to God than any other season of the year. French thanks Hudson for the crucifix that he sent and for the translation of Father Stone's poem which is beautiful and accurate. He is going to return the papers that Hudson sent to him as soon as he has them all read. French does not wish that Hudson be a victim of hay fever unless...

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-f
Scope and Contents Hudson's letter received. French had supposed that Hudson was a convert and was glad to be corrected. He has had a letter from Mr. Perkins who is enjoying the climate and the work but is a little homesick. French does not suppose that any special friendship would have obtained between the two saints mentioned, if they had known each other on earth. DeHoven was no less attractive a preacher than the French Abbe. In answer to Hudson's question, French means by the "American Church" one...

Scope and Contents

Two papers received reminded French of a debt. French would not object to having his letter suggest an article to the Editor of the "Catholic World." French said in a letter to Hudson "Invective has no weight with me no matter from what source it comes." He wants to know if that was intended for a shot at him, as he never does such things consciously. Has Hudson heard from Perkins? He seems to be cutting loose all of his old associations. :: X-2-f A.L.S. 2 pp. 12 mo

Several issues of the "Catholic World" have been received since Hudson last wrote. Father Hewit's article on the "Genesis of the Catholic Church" has only been glanced at as French dreads serials. Identifier: CHUD X-2-d
Scope and Contents Hudson's note acknowledging receipt of the Christian Eclectic had been received by French just at a time when he believing that the first copy had been lost was preparing to order another. He presumes that Hudson's statement styling one of the articles in the Eclectic as based upon a misunderstanding of the doctrines of the Catholic Church refers to "Legal Evidence of the Petrine Claims." Convinced that differences on this subject constitute the main source of friction between the...

 Item
Identifier: CDET III-2-i
Scope and Contents The situation in their city is unfair to Father Francis Van der Bom? . Only those of other denominations have any pleasure in the situation. The Bishop should not listen to those who are doing the complaining against Father Francis. They are people who have not made their Easter duty for as much as 7 years. Some think he is too strict. With regard to the school Father Mary Paul Wehrle thinks that Father Francis is speculating when building it. Yet the school was only half of what it should...
