He is sorry to hear that Edwards continues to suffer ill health. It is a pity that a young man like Edwards should break down so early in life. He wrote to Father Corby suggesting that he would be glad to give three or four illustrated lectures but has received no reply. He is sending the Gettysburg pictures and it would not be necessary for him to go to N.D. as far as the pictures are concerned. He has concluded to postpone his visit to Notre Dame until October when the G.A.R. post will be mustered in. Edwards need not open the pictures until he comes. He will proceed with the Monitor and Merrimac just as soon as the canvas is dry enough to paint on. He will mail Edwards the maps of the three days Battle of Gettysburg. The position of the Irish Brigade is marked by an X. These maps are very scarce. He also encloses an autograph letter of General Winfield Scott Hancock who commanded the division to which the Irish Brigade was attached. He expects to visit Washington in about two weeks and will call up Edwards' mother's pension claim if he has the opportunity. He will ship "The Monitor and Merrimac" in about six weeks. This is awful news. His good friend William Corby, C.S.C. is no more. He wants Edwards to write him all the details of his last hours. He wrote to him about a week ago. He wishes Edwards would send him the full military record and birth-place of General William A. Olmstead. Mulholland sees that Olmstead has been elected commander of the Notre Dame (G.A.R. Grand Army of the Republic) Post. He bought a painting by the great Polish artist Malczewski, "Death of an Exile in Siberia"; it is valued at $2000. If Edwards can use it for the University, he will sell it.

He has been so busy with the G.A.R. and death in the family that he forgot to write Edwards when he shipped the two boxes Edwards left there. His wife's sister came on a visit and died in his house. He stopped at Harrisburg and saw Bishop Shanahan who promised to get some things together for Edwards. If Edwards writes the bishop, he will most likely have a portrait of his brother painted for the university as his brother was the first bishop of Harrisburg. :: XI-2-b A.L.S. 1p.

His portrait is all finished and will be shipped within a month. Prof. Ludwig Fabre, the painter, wishes to keep it on exhibition for a few weeks longer. Mulholland will pay for the frame to make up for the blunder of the big freight bill The Rev. H. The Catholic Alumni Sodality of the city intends to erect a statue to Father William Corby C.S.C. on the battle field of Gettysburg. Edwards will please send him a good photograph of the picture at Notre Dame. He asks who is the President of the Congregation of the Holy Cross and if the order would take an interest in helping them raise funds. Edwards' card from Rock Island received. Bishop Patrick Ryan and Bishop John W. Shanahan wrote strong letters of endorsement and gave good fat checks.
