 Item
Identifier: CANO V-5-f
Scope and Contents As Blanc gave Kelly permission to come here he now returns his thanks and lets him know that he hopes to leave shortly. He would have left as soon as Father Hector Figari, C.M. Figary arrived but two objects detained him: the English catechism he used to teach and his power to render many services to the Sisters Religious of the Sacred Heart . But it appears they are not coming. If Kelly proposes anything, it is immediately opposed, not by Father Joseph Giustiniani, C.M. but by Figary whose...

Kelly, Father James, Natchitoches, Louisiana, to Bishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1846 August 14

 Item
Identifier: CANO V-5-f
Scope and Contents Kelly has just received Blanc's letter. Kelly did not come to America for his own personal interest; all he ever required was for Blanc to place him where he could serve him and religion best. His friends Mr. Leon and Mr. Manot both wished him to leave. Blanc will never get a better man than Leon: he leaves Manot to count his dollars. Wherever Kelly may be, if he can be of service, Blanc is to let him know. At present his going would add to Father Joseph Giustiniani, C.M. 's trouble. Father...

Scope and Contents After 9 months of suffering, Kelly again addresses Blanc. He returned here on Father Auguste Martin 's letter and by Blanc's advice. But he knew he could not last with that lady. Kelly, James, New Orleans, Louisiana, to Archbishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1851 March 8

 Item
Identifier: CANO VI-1-a
Scope and Contents Kelly cannot leave New Orleans without once more thanking Blanc for his many acts of Kindness. He is under a double debt to Father Stephen Rousselon. It may appear strange that he is absenting himself from the house every day. The reason for doing so is the miserable state of the majority of Kelly's country's people in New Orleans. They forget every honorable principle and are an incessant trouble to society in general and to Blanc and his house in particular. Four years ago Blanc asked...

Kelly, James, New Orleans, Louisiana, to Archbishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1854 February 7

 Item
Identifier: CANO VI-1-g
Scope and Contents Kelly arrived in town last night. He hopes Blanc will not blame him for going contrary to his advice when he is acquainted with the circumstances under which Kelly left Natchitoches. For the last 3 or 4 months, Bishop Augustus Marie Martin took everything in the church out of Kelly's hands until he had little more to do than ring the bell. Blanc can imagine how Kelly felt living in Martin's house and receiving money and making him no return. Had Kelly means of his own to assist Martin, he...

Kelly has much to be thankful to God for. From an humble start he now occupies a high position, he thinks so at least. He married a Protestant girl seven years ago last month—Tim Sherman's niece—and now she is a devoted Catholic....

Scope and Contents Kelly has been at his new post for nearly two months and likes it pretty well, but there is no Catholic Church nearer than Watertown New York ten miles off. Kelly wishes to get on the retired list to be able to live in some little town where he can educate his children and hear Mass on Sunday Kelly thought Fort Warren Massachusetts bad enough where they had a boot every other Sunday. There seems to be plenty of lukewarm Catholics here who might hire a hall where services could be held once...
