 Item
Identifier: CANO V-5-b
Scope and Contents Mr. Thelon of Angers has spent two months at Havre; he decided to find a job in primary education but has failed to find one. Herval gave him a letter of recommendation but Blanc is to regard it as null. Thelon is an honest man but he has no education and is not a practical Christian. Herval depends on the kindness of the bearer of this letter for news of Blanc. They have a new archbishop, Archbishop Louis Edmund Blanquart of Bailleul, former bishop of Versailles. He is an excellent man. He...

Dates: 1855 January 19

Herval, Father G., Havre, France, to Archbishop Anthony Blanc, 1855 February 5

 Item
Identifier: CANO VI-1-i
Scope and Contents Herval is perplexed about the double commission Blanc has given him. He responded to the first; Blanc's places are almost reserved, at least his names are registered. In reply to the second question: according to the authority of two men, the steamer in question is a good ship on a good sea; it would suffer in a heavy sea. However, this steamer has had no accident any more than any other ship Blanc could take. At Liverpool the Cunard line has been established since 1839, and has had no...

 Item
Identifier: CANO VI-1-j
Scope and Contents

Herval has carried out the painful mission Blanc assigned him. Mr. Iselin regrets not having Blanc. Iselin learned in Paris that there was a panic in some minds. Herval, Father G., Havre, France, to Archbishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1854 March 14

 Item
Identifier: CANO VI-1-g
Scope and Contents Herval is sending the pastoral letter for this year no enclosure. The Bishops of France have worked together?. The pastoral of the Bishop of Bayeux is admirable. All goes well at Havre. Sunday is a little better observed since the stores are closed. The workers are better than the merchants. Herval has formed a society of workers to instruct them in religion. The sheep-shearers? Society has a night school and a library. It is under the patronage of St. Francis Xavier. The Society of St....

Herval, Father G.?, Havre, France, to Archbishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1850 September 28

 Item
Identifier: CANO V-5-n
Scope and Contents

He writes his respects. His position is still the same; he is still overloaded with work. He lacks only one virtue, holiness. All his confreres are well as is their pastor. Father Benard, a canon and decorated by the Legion of Honor, is dean and pastor of Notre? Dame?. Their archbishop while not bedridden, is very ill. It is a nervous trembling which grows worse. :: V-5-n A.L.S. French 2pp. 8vo.

Identifier: CANO V-5-e

Herval, Father G, Havre, France, to Bishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1845 March 17

 Item
Identifier: CANO V-5-c
Scope and Contents

Herval takes advantage of the trip of a good Catholic Alsatian to send news and his thanks for Blanc's letter. They had a mission at Our Lady of the Havre. Father Marquet preached with rare talent. But it was a complete failure! Knowing that he was a Jesuit the upper class of Havre did not deign to come; there were only a small number of the pious and a few workingmen. Prejudice is great. The courage of the bishops of France does not extend to the masses. :: V-5-c A.L.S. French 3pp. 8vo.

Herval, Father G?, Havre, France, to Bishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1848 September 27

 Item
Identifier: CANO V-5-j
Scope and Contents The bearer of this letter is an excellent young man who plans to settle in New Orleans. He knows that a fortune will not be found in France since the miracles of February. Providence manifested itself in June as it had in May and February; they were saved by God. The presidential election was another manifestation, in spite of threats things turned out otherwise than one thought. Herval has remained at their church as first assistant; his colleague is pastor of St. Francis at Havre. :: V-5-j...

Scope and Contents The departure of the steamer St. Louis is set for February 14. First class is 800 francs, second class is 400. Herval believes that if Blanc were accompanied by a certain number of persons, he would be given a reduction in price. William Iselin, general agent, asks Herval to tell Blanc that if he comes he will be welcome and if he cannot take passage on the St. Louis, he will not be troubled for the difference. However it will be bad to deprive them of a visit. :: VI-1-i A.L.S. French 3pp....
