As chairman of the meeting, Moriarty writes Lefevere for a priest, promising to discharge all the duties required of them as Catholics. Weekly, Catholics die without the last sacraments, and many children are unbaptized. With summer approaching, there is danger of sunstroke, fever, and perhaps, cholera. Moriarty asks that the Freeman be sent to Joseph Lindsay, Stephentown, New York at his expense. He encloses a clipping from the Syracuse Courier. There is great excitement over the controversy. He has a number of converts under his instruction, and baptized one, Mary McMaster, whose father was a blue Presbyterian. Bishop Huntington's article appeared last Saturday, and Moriarty notified his congregation he would give the final reply to Huntington and Dr. Clarke the past evening.
