Thorpe thanks Hudson for the catalogue. Following Hudson's advice given in a recent conversation, Thorpe writes to secure Brothers of Holy Cross for the forthcoming school year at the Cleveland Cathedral school. Hudson's letter stating that there is no possibility of getting Holy Cross brothers next year came as a surprise. If the Congregation changes its plans and can spare two brothers, they would be acceptable. If Hudson thinks it necessary, Thorpe will go to Notre Dame, but he is willing to leave the matter in Hudson's and Father-General Edward Sorin's hands. Their schools are the first in the diocese and they desire to maintain their excellence. If the Brothers of the Congregation of the Holy Cross cannot supply a teacher, Thorpe will be forced to hire a layman. He thinks he is in arrears with his subscription to the Freeman, and encloses $10.00 to be applied for this purpose. He sympathizes with McMaster in his loss of wife and child, but considered from Heaven or with the eyes of faith, these bereavements are really gains. He thinks it proper that he give a lecture on John Cardinal Newman should he later accept the invitation. Thorpe knew Denis Florence McCarthy but not as well as he knew Newman.
