Scope and Contents Hudson's letter received. Ryder wrote in reply to Eliza A. Starr. His compilation of Catholic poetry has been a labor of love. Ryder has found the work from the time of Chaucer to the beginning of the present century. What manner should Ryder proceed to obtain the biographies of Miss Donnelly, Miss Starr or Miss Skidmore? It is difficult to ascertain whether a person is Catholic or not. There are many Catholics who have written nothing worthy of being included in a volume which contains...

 Item — Box CHUD 2
Identifier: CHUD X-2-f
Scope and Contents Hudson's letter of the 9th received. Not a better medium could be found than the Ave Maria for placing such a controversy before the people whom they wish to reach. Its pages are not the place for long continued discussions. If Hudson thinks Ryder severe upon Mr. Egan, Hudson should remember that Egan himself advocates candid expression. Ryder rejoices that Hudson approves of his volume but wonders-why not have the biographies written for the "Ave Maria?" Hudson could have a reasonable...

Scope and Contents Ryder has recovered from his illness. The original figures for publishing the book were $1200 for four hundred pages. Since the book contains only 186 pages the cost of composition, paper and presswork was reduced more than one-half, allowing $100 for binding it could not cost more than $700. Hudson says, it will be a long time before Professor Joseph Lyons gets his money back. How come? The special edition alone would pay the cost of the 1,000 copies. According to the orders Lyons had...

Scope and Contents Ryder's illness is worse, which prevents him from doing the orders that would pay a good sum. His work is not as congenial as was editing the New York Catholic, but it gives him a living. He would like to be the one who fulfills Hudson's needs by writing a monthly article on a Catholic celebrity for the Ave Maria. Concerning the book, it is of interest to Catholics alone, although Ryder had hoped it would excite Protestant interest to investigate literary work of Catholics and thus...

Scope and Contents Ryder is very ill and has been unable to work regularly. Concerning Father Thomas Scully, Ryder wishes he could have said more but he did what he could. He wrote to Father Matthew Russell, S.J., for copies of I. M. As for the Catholic World, Ryder is not suprised, as Maurice Francis Egan says, "T. F. Galwey doesn't like poetry anyhow", so what could one expect. Ryder's six months on the Boston Evening Star has improved it. As for Samuel H. Derby, Ryder is afraid the man is beyond...

Scope and Contents Ryder is resigned to meet death calmly. He has no photographs of himself and is unable to afford having one taken. Father R.'s letter is forwarded; it contains something that will please Joseph A. Lyons. Ryder is sorry that "Hawker " is delayed. He recognized the article on Henry W. Longfellow that appeared in the Scholastic as Hudson's. John Oldcastle 's work "Journals and Journalism", Ryder did not read.
