Ryder's wife and daughter reached Chicago two weeks ago. They live together and get along fine. His little girl thinks highly of her father. Ryder wants to know if Hudson linked the poem "Liberty" and if he published the sonnet "The Yearning for Things Divine"? He likes Charles Warren Stoddard 's "Troubled Heart". Ryder has been threatened with lung fever. He encloses an attempt at a sonnet. Ryder comments briefly on his work. He is glad that Maurice Francis Egan is pleased and Egan is right about the sincerity of Ryder's work. Ryder has given his wife all his pay on every Saturday but one and he has been under the influence of liquor but twice since his wife arrived. From the way Hudson writes it seems he has lost all faith in Ryder. The truth was bad but misrepresented is worse. Ryder had to send his wife the money with which to come to Chicago, that is why he is without money. Ryder has promised his mother to come home. When Hudson paid hid last visit to Chicago, Ryder tried to avoid all disagreeable topics. He regrets the affair of which Mrs. Ryder wrote, occurred. She thought that her husband would lose his place after the elections, but she was wrong. Such has not happened. For Ryder, it was a pleasure to learn that Hudson admired several of his latest works. On Sunday Ryder had a chat with Father Joseph Roles of St. Mary's Church. If Mrs. Ryder should happen to write to Hudson as she threatens to do, Ryder asks Hudson to form no rash judgement that would injure their friendship because of what she may say in her epistle.
