He therefore makes him his vicar-general for the English speaking people of the dioceses and confers on him the powers of vicar general which he enumerates. The Archbishop does not remember receiving a request to appoint a Congress Committee. He does not wish to name any one to do a paper for the Congress, since he knows of no competent person. He asks how many should be appointed for the Congress Committee, and what the duties shall be. Patrick Poland should be a member; he is able but unwilling to write a paper. P.S. Onahan is to send circulars and instructions in regard to the Catholic Education Exhibit.

Patrick Poland of Cincinnati will serve as Vice-President from the diocese of Cincinnati to the American Catholic Congress. The Vicar General, John C. Albrinck is in charge of selecting other delegates. He is not prepared to give the names, since his work is more difficult than expected. Elder has asked him to hasten as much as possible. He would be able to send Bishop Edwards Fenwick's vestment now but fears that his successors would object to his giving away the precious heirlooms of the diocese. Possibly in the change of circumstances the Catholic Historical Society might be preferred as a place of deposit and exhibition. He asks if Edwards would take them as loans subject to be recalled by the Diocese.

On the 5th, Elder wrote in answer to Odin's of the 19th of last month which he received only on the 4th. He proposed that they take the English steamer first class. John B. Quegles desires his passage engaged also.
