Maes invites Hudson to visit him at Covington. Maes who was recently consecrated a bishop does not want Hudson to feel he cannot be as familiar with him as he has been in the past. Scope and Contents The proof is poetical, but it is not historical truth. Maes sends Hudson the first installment of an historical sketch that will acquaint Hudson with the exact truth. There are three Bismarckians and half a dozen milk and water priests in Covington who worry Meas. Hardly an educated man in the neighborhood and he thirsts for genial companionship. Archbishop William Elder is a comfort to him and some of the priests are excellent; but give him the friends of Father Maes. Could he visit...

In Maes' judgement "An Invention of the Devil" would not suit the Ave Maria. He sends the translation to Hudson to be judged critically. Maes has a list of Reginald Cardinal Pole's manuscripts from the Vatican Library. He asks Hudson and Maurice Egan for information about the literature on Pole. He thinks Butler's treatise on Purgatory a fitting paper for one of Hudson's "Ave Maria Series". Maes requests that Hudson have the first five articles of the series bound and sent to him. He accepted two lectures in Detroit, because he is driven to get money. Hudson must have noticed the trick Father Ralph Dewey, S.J., played on Maes, writing for some notes to complete...

Maes thanks Hudson for the picture. He has a scheme to squeeze a gothic altar out of the generous hands of a prosperous friend. Maes wishes a generous indulgence for each visit and prayers before the shrine he is building. Will Father-General Edward Sorin, C.S.C. be able to get it for Maes. News about Charles Warren Stoddard is comforting. Something to do is his panacea. Hudson may tell Stoddard that Maes is delighted to know that dire conviction of unescapeable duty has brought him to do so. Does Hudson know how impossible a Bishop's priests make it to be one of them and have a little sensible recreation sometimes?
