Eldridge informs Lefevere that the Senate passed the bill that day to amend the "act to authorize the sale of certain lands on Macon Reserve ". Sick for 2 ½ years, unable to leave his room for 3 weeks, unable to work, he is in destitute circumstances. Through the kindness of some ladies, his wife gets material from which she makes gentlemen's shirts, which they sell, and the profit is the only source of sustenance. He sends some autograph letters of Father Isaac Hecker. He would like to have a picture of the Sacred Heart statue in front of the college, the one having Venite ad me Omnes on the pedestal. Father Elliott accepts the invitation to prepare a paper for the (Columbian) Catholic Congress on "The Missionary Work of the Catholic Church in the New World. He asks if he may confine himself mainly to the United States. If so, he shall send in copies for approval. This regulation galls Father Elliott. He wishes there were some other means to secure the same good end.

His girls are 14 and 15 years of age and have been attending the local Convent school but he wishes them to study away from home for a year.
