He would like to receive Stoddard's "Troubled Heart" which pleased him more than most convent stories. He will defer his journey to Rome until the celebration of Pope Leo XIII's jubilee is over. Howley could not find the suggested poem in the Pilot, but the poem "Song of the Sea" he would like to use with John Boyle O'Reilly's permission. Hudson treated the Atlantic Monthly too nicely in his last literary notes. Has Hudson seen "Confessions of a Roman Catholic" in the latest Forum. P. Cashman is going to organize the Catholic Union of Chicago, an association to embrace all the best Catholic elements in the city. They will have a club house with restaurant, library, and a monthly magazine. Howley is being considered as the editor and requests that Hudson write a letter of recommendation in his behalf. Howley has been given the missions of Barrow and Sileby by the Bishop of Nottingham. He likes the place and the Bishop has welcomed him cordially. Hudson is asked to forward Mass intentions because the people are few and they have lost the habit of these offerings. Castle Garden is the gateway through which the vast majority of immigrants pass enroute to new homes in America. The mission has been dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. He thinks she is unduly influenced by the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Hoart of Mary and Father John Frederick Friedland, the chaplain, and Mother Gertrude of Monroe.
