Father Richmond, as Father Zahm calls him, but whose real name is Father Etchman F. X. Etschman , left here. Etchman took all his books with him, and the new priest is German and keeps nothing but German works. Corby just made $1400 on a fair for this place. He has been very busy. He is glad the marble basins in the washroom are used; they will not put him down for a fool now. :: XI-1-b A.L.S. 2pp. 12mo.

He regrets not to be able to do something. He got a $200 collection Christmas which was enough for his personal debts. He was under the impression that the Archbishop Most Rev. John M. Henni would sign a mortgage that would clear up debts and salary, but he would not sign it. Times are hard here. Corby is getting no salary, but he hopes to get the debt under control in six months and will then demand from the congregation all that it owes him. :: XI-1-a A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo.

He is anxious to know how Edwards is getting along. He asks if Jo is still alive and if he has a pass on the Lake Shore. He knew that Edwards was always true to their friendship and was not surprised at his not writing. He has in progress a nice little house. He will have a room for Edwards when he visits him in the summer. He is very glad to hear that Notre Dame is booming. He does not write often to anyone at Notre Dame, still the fast friendship formed has not changed a particle. Maj . Gaul Sykes was well known to Corby; his 5th Army Corps was noted for doing good work. Corby will see the Panorama of Gettysburg when he goes to Chicago. Although he is retired from public life still he likes to remember his friends. Corby is doing well; his new house is fine. He thanks Edwards for his kind wishes. Edwards' constant friendship is in perfect harmony with his character. Corby does not forget his dear friends at Notre Dame and elsewhere. Corby suggests that Edwards get a respectable vestment from Notre Dame to replace it. He was sorry to hear that Fathers Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C . and Daniel Spillard, C.S.C . are sick. P. S. Corby plans to write to Father John A. Zahm to get the geography of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and old Mexico. Father Patrick Condon, C.S.C., while visiting his parents, wrote that he planned to stop off at Notre Dame on his return trip to Watertown. News there is purely "local"; it would interest a man like Father Patrick J. Colovin who spent several years there. Hudson's letter of September 27 was received. Through the "Scholastic" and other sources they learn of the prosperity of Notre Dame. The books have been shipped by express. He does not think there are many copies of the "Catholic Miscellany" of charleston to be found. The Sisters of Mercy in Sumter, S. C. have a copy. The copy they had was burned in the great fire of Dec. 11, 1861. They have 7 vols. of "U. S. Catholic Magazine"; 6 Vols. "Metropolitan".
