Scope and Contents
This collection documents the activities of María A. Díaz de Guerra--a Uruguayan historian--in her research on the city of Maldonado, Uruguay, the surrounding region, its inhabitants and public services such as libraries and schools. It contains administrative records of the city of Maldonado, including reports, committee proceedings, invoices, and publications; Diaz’s notes and compiled research files; correspondence of both Diaz and citizens of Maldonado; and articles by Diaz or about Maldonado. Also included are newspaper clippings, conference materials, maps, and photographs of Maldonado. Significant topics covered in this collection are the city of Maldonado, Uruguay; the first public library of Maldonado; public schools in Maldonado; and various prominent inhabitants of Maldonado. Materials include manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, photographs, negatives, postcards, posters, pamphlets, notebooks, maps, transparencies, drawings, and other related materials.

Biographical / Historical
Maria A. Díaz de Guerra was born in Montevideo, 17 July 1924. She is a Uruguayan writer, historian and poet, and has published countless articles on history and three books of poetry. Her historical work focused on regional history, particularly that of the cities of Maldonado, Montevideo, and Punta del Este.

This collection is arranged into seven series: i) Administrative Documents; ii) Clippings; iii) Correspondence; iv) Research Files and Notes; v) Writings and Drafts; vi) Photographs; vii) Ephemera. Series I, II, III, and VII are arranged chronologically; series IV and V are arranged alphabetically; and Series VI is arranged in its original order.
Processing Information
The contents of folders 277-338, 339-458, and 459-496 were originally housed in three individual unbound boarded folders. These items were housed individually to facilitate patron use and remain in the original order in which they were transferred.
