Scope and Contents Cooney recalls a case of some years back when Father-General Edward Sorin, C.S.C. was called by a neighbor on his death bed to receive him into the Church. The dying man refused to renounce Freemasonary, so Sorin refused to baptize him. The case was sent to Rome from whence the reply came that under the circumstances Sorin could baptize the dying man. Sorin instructed Cooney to write Hudson for a copy of Rome's answer which was published in the Ave Maria, either in 1877 or 1878....

Lamport greatly admired the attractiveness and literary beauty of the poem, "Legend", which appeared in the Ave Maria. He had 500 copies of it printed.
