Cooney, C.S.C., Father Peter Paul, Baltimore, Maryland, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1884 November 21
Scope and Contents
Cooney recalls a case of some years back when Father-General Edward Sorin, C.S.C. was called by a neighbor on his death bed to receive him into the Church. The dying man refused to renounce Freemasonary, so Sorin refused to baptize him. The case was sent to Rome from whence the reply came that under the circumstances Sorin could baptize the dying man. Sorin instructed Cooney to write Hudson for a copy of Rome's answer which was published in the Ave Maria, either in 1877 or 1878. Sessions of the Third Plenary Council are held twice daily. A reception was held for the Archbishops, Bishops and ecclesiastics of the Council which was a success. Among those in attendance were 500 ladies and gentlemen, the elite of Baltimore. Speeches were made by Charles Joseph Bonaparte, Judge William Merrick and Archbishop John Joseph Williams :: X-2-n A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
