Welch, S.J., Father Edw. H., to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 March 31
Scope and Contents
Welch's students have two weeks at Easter and he was sent to give a triduum to a sodality connected with a convent of the Holy Child Jesus. The Congregation was founded about a half a century ago by an American lady, a convert Mrs. Connelly, in England. A church called the Gesu is being finished here. There are ten side chapels with a confessional and 13 altars in all. Things are going on prosperously at Georgetown. They are putting up a great clock for their central tower. They hope to finish the main entrance of the new building. Welch understood from Boston that Dr. Dwight gave an elegant reception to the Cardinal. At one in Washington just before Lent Welch saw the late Chief-Justice in perfect health. Did Hudson hear about the circumstances under which Father Gallagher bought the land for the new school? It was a lovely spot on Mt. Pleasant, but the owners would not sell it. Later a man offered to get it for Gallagher as the owner did not want to sell to Catholics. Mrs. Matthews tells Welch that Arthur? Weld and family are added to the converts in Boston. :: X-3-g A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.
