Stoddard's health has not improved. If he could get back to a Christian climate, the Pacific Coast approaches it, nothing will tempt him to leave. As long as Hudson has a breath in his body he will be grinding at the same old mill and when his life is over the mill will run itself into the ground. He asks Hudson to send him some money.
