A bad cold was responsible for his neglect. He discusses the volumes of Catholic World that they need to complete their set, and tells Edwards of some magazines he is sending to be used for exchange. He just read a letter of Father Edward Sorin, C.S.C. which he came across in an old volume. of the Annals of the Propagation of the Faith, vol. 8, of 1845. He was informed by a subscriber of the Journal that a lottery would take place in Denver city, Colorado for the benefit of the Sisters. He sent $5 for a ticket but received none and received no answer to a letter written to the agent concerning it. As this took place in August, he has reasons to believe that a fraud had been committed, and so asks McMaster's opinion of the affair. It is destined to exert a great influence in Catholic circles. He was right in the middle of the cyclone that struck Washington. McMahon Hall suffered a little in broken windows. The increase of lay students at Catholic University has been rather slight. Most of them are law students. The course in law is very thorough. He can now realize the true worth of Edwards' generous advice in regard to a profession. For the average young fellow literature means slavish labor and starvation.
