He recently learned that money had been demanded of some Catholic institutions for publishing the historical data matter in "Catholic Educational Exhibit". Maurelian had no knowledge of such an attempt and would never consent to the introduction of advertising matter into the history; this would detract from its historical value. In a day or two he expects to go to Memphis. He is in need of a rest. If Edwards has finished with the few lines he gave Edwards, he would be pleased to have them returned. Attached is a copy of a few lines given Edwards by Bro. Maurelian. The copy is by J. Murray. Maurelian has received no salary for the work he did in conection with the Catholic Exhibit. Edwards can keep the set of Photos for the Catholic Historical Collection. He would sell the Columbian Library of Catholic Authors with the autograph letters of authors for $1000. There is no hurry in deciding anything in the matter of the Library. He would be sorry to see it go to Institutions that would scatter the books. He will not have time to give attention to this matter within the next year. FatherJ.J. Carroll, pastor of St. Thomas Church in Chicago has translated the Gospel of St. Mathew into Irish on a sheet 60 feet long. He submitted to Bishop John L. Spalding of Peoria all the information he had concerning the Columbian Library of Catholic Authors. They have an offer of $700 for the collection but the parties do not wish to have it as a public library. Spalding agreed that it would be better to give the library to Notre Dame with the autograph letters of the authors for $500. R. F. Downing and Co. wrote that Edwards refused a book belonging to the Library of Catholic Authors on the score of expense. He regrets that Edwards did not refer the bill to him.
