The mitre he sent was of Archbishop John Purcell. They have a vestment of Bishop Fenwick, but Elder is using it for Mass. He will send what he can in Pastorals. The cane he sent belonged to Archbishop Samuel Eccleston who gave it to Purcell. He put a new stock on it and gave it to Father Thomas Blake.

It is necessary for him to have at home the letters which he entrusted to Edwards. He asks that Edwards make an itemized list of those he desires to keep for the library. The earlier photographs with the full face, prominent jaw, firm lips, and the eyes bright with a liveliness both of energy and kindness, are the ones that do most justice. Otherwise he wants the manuscript returned to him. His brother, Bishop William Henry Elder, will not be able to visit Chicago. He suggests that it would be a good policy for the university to invite Charles Dudley Warner, who is here writing up Chicago for Harpers Magazine, to pay them a visit.

Elder asks whether it would be feasible to write a paper on "Neglect of rurals". It would be extremely "free in thought", some what blaming the clergy. She emphasizes the importance of rural population, and decries the fact of Catholic negligence. She refers to an enclosed statement and asks whether she may use it.

Elder mentions a long list of well known clergy and laymen who sustain her in her effort to gain recognition by writing a paper on "Immigration and Colonization" for the (Columbian Catholic) Congress. When Onahan's invitation came, she was extremely pleased. She holds her paper to have it typewritten.

Miss Elder admits that she is a "Miss", and asks to be allowed to write a second paper, on "Pauperism". She asks about the colonization movement with which Onahan is connected and about Archbishop Ireland's attempt. Why did it fail? Since she shall not attend the Columbian Catholic Congress in person, she has asked Senator E.D. White, a grand orator, to read her papers. She is not certain of his cooperation. She asks Onahan to send him an invitation also.
