Scope and Contents "E" notifies McMaster that Major John D. Keiley has been named Commendatore of the Order of Pius IX and that Cardinal Franchi will send the brief of the order to him in a few days. Identifier: CMMA I-1-o
Scope and Contents A letter from Henry Sayers and McMaster's paper of the 15th, inform her that McMaster has suffered a great loss in the death of his wife. Though not having met Mrs. McMaster, Miss Edes had held her in high esteem because of the many tributes to her high quality she had heard. Cardinal Alexander Barnabo has offered to say Mass for her and has promised to inform the Pope, who will pray for her soul. She sends McMaster a method of saying the Beads for the Souls in Purgatory which she...

They are: Cardinal Leonardo Antonelli, Prefect of the Propaganda, Mgr. Bedini, Mgr. Jacobini, Mgr. Persico, and Mgr. O'Connell. She added a sixth, that of Mgr. Hostlot. Persico was as disagreeable as possible about the portrait. He is very ill-mannered. She sees by the papers that Father Sorin has returned to America. What a wonderful man he is ! She doesn't know...

Identifier: CEDW XI-1-h
Scope and Contents The portraits by Signor Carnevale are ready to be sent. Perhaps they can send them in the box of the Archbishop of New York who will come to Rome on his return from Palestine. She has heard nothing of Edwards' host of last summer. Miss Mary Gwendolyn Caldwell of University fame was in great danger of death from typhoid fever. She sent Father Daniel E. Hudson a copy of the "Osservatore Romano" in which she gave account of the doings at Baltimore with mention of Father General Edward Sorin,...

Identifier: CEDW XI-1-h
Scope and Contents The portraits of Cardinals Capalti, Franchi and Simeoni are pronounced excellent. She had the banker, Mr. Handley, attend to forwarding them to America. She is sorry to hear of the death of Madame Gregori. She is sending Father Daniel E. Hudson the "Mustere du Sang" over which there was so much talk relative to the letter of the Pole and in which Cardinal Manning took his part. She cannot understand all this sickly sentimentality over the wrongs of the Jews. P. S. Archbishop Corrigan had...

Scope and Contents She has been suffering from another attack of influenza. The cold this winter has been unheard of in Italy. Mgr. Jacobini gave Carnevali every facility. The Propaganda will loan the artist the portrait of Cardinal Leonard Antonelli. The Rector of the North American College will loan him the portrait of Cardinal Bedini. She asks if Edwards wants Bedini painted as a cardinal or a prelate. The prelate would be most suitable as Bedini had nothing to do with the college as a Cardinal. :: XI-1-i...

Edes, Ella B., Rome,Italy, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1890 Februry 24

 Item — Box CHUD 14
Identifier: CHUD X-3-k
Scope and Contents Was Father Reuben Parsons a student at the North American College? Whenever Hudson receives volumes from Propaganda he may know Edes is the guilty party. She hoped Hudson liked "Mystere du Sang". Edes has no doubt the accusation is well founded. The care the Jews take to buy up and destroy all the pamphlets on the matter proves their sense of guilt. The author of "Tyborne", Mother Magdalen Taylor is in Rome with her nuns, known as the "Nuns of the Holy Wash Tubs". Taylor is perfectly...

Scope and Contents Edes will send Hudson a facsimile of the chains of St. Peter and St. Paul. Did Hudson meet Father Carberry, O.P., when he visited America with the Dominican General? Hudson no doubt has seen the papal telegram to Washington and the reply. Protestant newspapers went so far as to declare that the Catholic Church was anti-republic. Edes told the editor of the Observatore Romano and prevailed upon him to tell Louis Cardinal Jacobini the mistake they had made. Giacomo Cardinal Antonelli...

Identifier: CEDW XI-1-j
Scope and Contents It is an age since anyone from Notre Dame has written. She laughs at the idea of having her picture in Memorial Hall. It is piping hot in Rome. She is disgusted with the Faribault-Ireland affair. She has no feeling but utter contempt for Archbishop John Ireland of St. Paul and his clique. Such intriguing was never witnessed; and all to run the risk of giving the death-blow to Catholic education in the United States. They maneuvered to get a special commission of Cardinals who knew nothing of...

Identifier: CEDW XI-1-i
Scope and Contents She received the Postal order and paid the artist. The portrait of Mgr. Ignatius Persico, Om. Cap. is considered a great success. She relates a story in connection with the picture of Persico, his rudeness, etc. It is the general opinion that Persico's term of office at Propaganda will not redound to the benefit of that institution; he is too old-foggy. Father Bernard Smith, O.S.B., Pro-Rector of the American College finally allowed his portrait to be taken when he learned that it would...
