He is in great anxiety at not having received a reply to his letter of Feb. 1 asking for a loan of $100 and a letter of recommendation to Bishop James Gibbons of Richmond, who is to open his college at Richmond at the end of August. Doyle, after consulting with brother priests and fearing they may neglect to send their names as Jus requests, decided that he was justified in transcribing the list, signed by the priests themselves at Retreat last summer, in which they endorsed Jus, with but one exception. Enclosed is a pamphlet of the distribution of prizes for the Chinese Scholastic, to the pupils of the Chinese Catholic College, under the Priests of the Society of Jesus. It is printed in Chinese. The College has 124 Chinese young men boarding at the School. They pursue studies in Latin and Chinese.
