Scope and Contents Dorsey is grateful to Maurice Francis Egan for writing the sketch "The Tenant of Gable End", but she is disturbed about the inaccuracies in the article. She has always written while under stress and feels she has missed her aim. Her best works, she feels, have been done for the Ave Maria. Except for one story, "Father Clement" by Father Charles Pise, S.J., Dorsey's stories were the first Catholic stories by an American writer. She was windowed in 1861, when her daughter, Nellie Ella...

Scope and Contents When Dorsey wrote that her stories were short she meant they were not serials, for she does not consider a story long even though it extends through three or four months. She finds that leading Catholic magazines in England and the United States continue to publish serials which keep the readers interest in both the story and magazine. Short stories are forgotten as soon as read and Dorsey feels she has no talents for writing them. Her object in writing a story is to illustrate what...

What are Hudson's doubts about "Palms"? Dorsey prizes the poem addressed to her by a Portuguese friend and regrets that it was not printed in the Ave Maria because the person probably saw Eliza Allen Starr and Eleanor Donnelly complimented by poetic tributes in the Ave Maria. Nellie Ella Lorraine Dorsey received...

Scope and Contents Dorsey sends a list of her contributions for the Ave Maria. She does this in the hope of getting a check. Doubtless, Hudson received Nellie's Ella Lorraine Dorsey letter written from Boston, after her trip to Halifax. Nellie's interview with Mr. Osgood was satisfactory. He has no prejudice as to...

Scope and Contents Dorsey thanks Hudson for the two drafts. The writing on the outside of the books assures Dorsey that Hudson is in good health. A copy of the "Mad Penitent" is requested when it comes out. Dorsey plans to use these stories for a series. They are having an anxious time as to what the administration will do after July 1st; most people believe the Civil Service Law will prove a rope of sand to them. Identifier: CHUD X-2-o
Scope and Contents After reading Hudson's letter Dorsey wondered if something she had said about Christian Reid had betrayed jealousy of her success. This was not intended. Dorsey's role as a story writer is unassailable. Yet she has found that theological arguments introduced into her stories prevent success. The clergy do not approve of it. Reid's story now in progress is clever. Dorsey is sorry to see anything of bitterness and condemnation against "our separated brethren" as Bishop John England termed...

Dorsey sends Hudson a copy of the Washington Post, calling attention to the oration of the Honorable John Daniels of Lynchburg, Virginia.
