The Freeman's Journal gave a notice of his book. He dined with James Alphonsus McMaster Sunday and McMaster was enthused about the book. The Standard noticed his book, also. Scope and Contents Egan was shocked to hear of the death of Samuel Hudson, Father Hudson's father. His dying in the creed in which he lived showed the honesty of his convictions. Hudson will do Egan a great favor by thanking Professor Timothy E. Howard, whose notice was too good. There are some errors at the beginning of his verses on Eleanor Cecilia Donnelly's book. The secular press in Philadelphia have given kind notices, but Egan has only seen the New York, "Times" and "World". "Preludes" may not sell...

Scope and Contents The Georgetown people think Egan should have put "Preludes" out for their building. Egan has great admiration for the Jesuits but they do not turn out as good Catholics as the Holy Cross Fathers. Their students are men of the old world. Should Egan write the circular? Scope and Contents Egan wants to take all of the best phrases out of the notices, including the notice of "Song and Sonnets" in Scribner. Dallas has no reason to be angry with Hickey as it was Egan who got his poem upside down, and also declined one of his manuscripts, which was excellent but too long. Hudson should make Dallas understand that Mr. Hickey admires him. The "Ave Maria" has improved in the last 2 years. Hudson has too much to do. If only Egan and Hudson had Scribner's resources and staff....

Egan is to meet Brother Stanislaus this afternoon. "Beth" wants condensation as well as the serial. Egan will keep and use part of the suggestions in Miss Starr's letter. The sonnet of Ethel Tani is good. Brother Stanislaus, C.S.C. is blooming like a rose and another week at the sea shore will give him another year of life. Hudson should come. Mr. Shea's address is in care of Frank Leslie. Scope and Contents Eliot Ryder lunched with Egan. Egan was wrong about the "human heart" and the "divine art of poetry." Ryder orated at great length and exhorted Egan to be true to his own convictions. Egan wonders if this is the kind of thing a fellow likes to take in with his modest half-brother of frugal repeat. In Rockaway, Brother Stanislaus was comparing the beauty of the New York belles with that which makes the Indiana girls so generally admired. Ryder informed Egan that he was more a child as...

Scope and Contents Hudson's letter received. Egan wonders how Hudson puts a glow in every line. Egan has noticed an article about "Preludes" in the "London Tablet" and the writer is not fair to his sonnets.
