Clarke has received Edwards' kind favor with the enclosure. He thanks Edwards for his invitation to visit Notre Dame. At what date is Eliza Allen Starr's visit expected? She can readily visit the University, but for Clarke it would be a special trip. He will endeavor to accept the invitation after Easter. Clarke sent invitations to Edwards and Father Walsh for the Washington's Birthday celebration at the Protectory.

While the bishops who died prior to 1888 have received their appropriate positions in the Lives of the Bishops, all who have died since are left without the same recognition. There are enough to make another large volume. But so far Clarke has not received payment for his outlay on the other volumes. Now all the bishops know and esteem Edwards. Edwards' active labors at the Columbian Catholic Congress must have been great and Clarke noticed that his labors continued in various Catholic interests for some time afterwards. The American Catholic Lay Congress seems to have been entirely clerical. The results of the congress were nil. No discussion took place, no method of improving the condition of the poor, of solving the labor question, of suppressing intemperance. :: XI-1-l A.L.S. 1p.
