Scope and Contents

The José M. The majority of the documents in this collection can be traced to the Duchy of Savoy, a now defunct Savoyard state run by the House of Savoy between 1416-1847. The House of Savoy documents span the House's... transformation from the Counts of Savoy (1003-1416) to the Dukes of Savoy (1416-1656) to the Kings of Sicily (1713-1720) and the Kings of Sardinia (1562-1878). The collection contains several documents of Philibert I (d. 1482),Charles III (d. 1553), Charles Emmanuel I (d. 1630), Victor Amadeus I (d. 1637), Charles Emmanuel II (d. 1675), Victor Amadeus II (d. 1732), Charles Emmanuel III (d. 1800), Charles Felix (d. 1831), and Charles Albert (d. 1849). Several items in the collection concern the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, a Catholic dynastic order of knighthood bestowed by the House of Savoy, of which Count D. Cesare Vittorio Valperga di Cuorgné, of the Valperga family, was a part. The collection contains public and private letters, grants of lands, military commissions, university degrees, settlements, patents, family trees, wills, passports, petitions, and ordinances pertaining to the aforesaid families.
