Mannix Mary E., San Diego, California, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1889 January 14
Scope and Contents
Mannix sends the remainder of her story and some verses commemorating the Purification. Since the boom collapsed, everything has gone to pieces in San Diego, but she thinks it good to be there to take advantage of the depression. Mr. John B. Mannix is getting considerable business, but finds it difficult to make collections. Saturday, he was made assignee for a firm failing in business. Her husband has been retained by a gold mining concern in Mexico for legal advise and given an interest in the mine. The company is having trouble selling stock, but Father Anthony Uback, their pastor, believes once the mine begins producing, Mannix's five hundred shares will be worth $50,000. Mannix advises Hudson to keep Sara Trainer Smith, because she writes prose and poetry. The only fault to be found with "Cecill's Fortune" is that the installments are too short. She sends a prospectus of the "Magazine of Poetry". :: X-3-i A.L.S. 9pp. 12mo.
