Scope and Contents

Dorsey was pained by the news of Hudson's illness and inquires if he can not be spared for a month from the Ave Maria, during which time he should take a vacation. If the Ave Maria goes out of Hudson's hands it would decline to its old status of goody and dull. Nellie Ella Lorraine Dorsey remarked that if Hudson retires she will never write another line for it. Her doctor thinks her heart is in a precarious state. Dorsey received John Murphy's statement with only $148 and charges for books which were paid last year. He is a skinflint, but by the disposition of his father's will, he has two greater skinflints behind him, who form the company and will until he is twenty-five. Regarding "The Flemings", Father Edward Sorin, C.S.C. gave Patrick O'Shea permission to publish the book, but in an innocent way and she has never blamed him. Dorsey wrote the story on condition that she retain the right to publish it in book form when it was finished in the Ave Maria. Both Father Neal Gillespie and Mother Angela Gillespie, in their letters to her, agreed to this. Unfortunately, she has since burned the letters and cannot show the written agreement to Sorin, who was in Europe when it was made. When Sorin landed in New York, on his return from Europe, O'Shea got his permission to publish "The Flemings" in book form, without Sorin's knowing the condition under which it was written for the Ave Maria, O'Shea then announced the book as being in Press, just as Dorsey was making arrangements with Kelly Piet of Baltimore to publish it. In justice to her, it should be explained to O'Shea, who has had the profits from the book for twenty years, that he has no right to the copyright he holds on it. Nellie has gone to Rehoboth Beach for a rest. Dorsey thinks Nellie can do something excellent with her pen. Louis Mohun spends much of his time with Commodore Daniel Ammen, who gives him notes of introduction to Senators, that he might talk to them about the Nicaragua Canal Project. Mohum is an authority on this subject since accompanying the expedition to Nicaragua. She thanks Hudson for his remarks on Religious Orders. Did Pope Leo XIII grant an indulgence to all who participate in Sorin's jubilee? :: X-3-h A.L. Incomplete 8pp. 12mo. 11
