DeVeuster, SS.CC., Father Joseph Damien, Kalawao, Molokai, Hawaiian Islands, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 May 17
Scope and Contents
DeVeuster's condition prevented him from acknowledging receipt of the tabernacles sooner. He describes the building of the new altar and the fitting of the tabernacles. Hudson and all who contributed funds for the tabernacles are thanked by DeVeuster. He is obliged to add an addition to the church and build a new chapel to replace the one blown down by a wind storm. The tabernacle for the Kalaupapa church will arrive by the next steamer from Honolulu. Father Lambert Conrardi, who twelve years ago expressed a willingness to come, arrived yesterday from Oregon. The Franciscan Sisters from Syracuse will soon arrive. His agent W.R. Meyer will select the location for the houses and begin constructing them. The government is making such improvements as laying waterpipes, building cottages and a dormitory for the 85 orphans in his care. :: X-3-g A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
