Egan, Maurice Francis, Brooklyn, New York, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1887 February 3
Scope and Contents
Egan telegraphed Father Walsh that he could not be at Notre Dame this semester. He has resigned both to James McMaster and to his administration. McMaster left no will and Egan found himself at McMaster's death in an impossible position. He was left to run and save the New York Freeman's Journal because the slightest intimation that Egan were going away would have driven away subscribers and advertisers. No money was left for hiring an assistant and it was hopeless to secure any one to fill his place. McCarthy would not do nor would T. F. Galwey or Reilly who is saner minded than the others and who has gone to the Catholic Universe. Father Thomas Walsh, C.S.C. and Hudson have astonished him by stating that they want Egan at Notre Dame. He should be there next session. :: X-3-d A.L.S. 6pp. 12mo.
