Doyle, Father William H., Amoy, China, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1886 December 10
Scope and Contents
Doyle states that when Father Angelo Zottoli's, S.J. work "Cursus Litteraturae Chinorum" was published, Sir Robert Hart, Inspector-General of the Imperial Maritime Customs of China ordered seventy copies from the Fathers at Shanghai for use in that service. Hart, J. McLeary Brown, the late commissioner of Customs at Shanghai and Mr. Glover are well known for their erudition in Chinese literature and language. Zottoli always dresses, preaches, reads and speaks as a Chinese Christian and is seldom seen in the foreign town of Shanghai. Doyle is grieved by the writings that he has seen in the "News of Goa" about the Padroado question. He believes the newspapers should be surpressed or turned over to the management of a good Catholic journalist. Five copies of Father John. A. Zahm's "What the Church Has Done for Science" are requested. :: X-3-c A.L.S. 5pp. 12mo.
