Mannix, Mary E., Cincinnati, Ohio, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1885 December 28
Scope and Contents
Her husband, John B. Mannix , took the position of assignee for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati against the advice of his friends and only after being begged to do so by Archbishop John B. Purcell . He had hoped to increase the assets of the creditors by investing the remaining money in Southern Railroad stocks, then at a premium. The stocks depreciated, he became frightened and lost his head. A small group of the creditors incited by lawyers of poor reputation have held meetings, heaped abuse on the Church and claimed the assignee was a tool of the priests and bishops. One of the lawyers is E. Potter Dusten . At meetings of the creditors, letters from purported creditors have been read, which creditors have since shown to be non-existent. :: X-3-a A.L.S. 12pp. 12mo.
