Smalley, Miss Mary E., Jefferson, Ohio, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1885 January 13
Scope and Contents
Smalley was a student at St. Mary's Academy during the period 1876-77. During this time she heard Hudson preach although she never made a personal acquaintance with him. The Catholics of Jefferson built a church, which burned to the ground after being used but five times. They have erected another church, which is only partially complete. A debt of $520 has been incurred and they need an Ostensorium, Cope and Veil. Since the parishioners are poor and cannot pay the debt, Smalley proposes to write an article on the parish, and asks Hudson to accept it as well as an article by her aunt Julia C. Smalley or by Eliza Allen Starr . The compensation would be used for church expenses. :: X-2-o A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.
