Stoddard, Charles Warren, Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1884 September 12

 Item — Box: CHUD 7
Identifier: CHUD X-2-n

Scope and Contents

Stoddard likes the idea of coming to Notre Dame to live. If he had an independent income, he would travel and write about the countries he has visited. He likes the idea of holding the Chair of English Literature, but he wants to know the duties this entails and how many and how large are the classes he will be expected to teach. Stoddard wishes to know if he can write freely to his friends and receive letters which would not be open to inspection by the president. He says he has given up wines and liquors and he believes he can give up smoking altogether. Stoddard has never been to college and he knows no language but English and he is a confirmed misspeller. Stoddard asks Hudson's opinion on the title "A Troubled Heart" for his book. If Hudson publishes it, he wishes it published under the name Charles Joseph Aloysius :: X-2-n A.L.S. 16pp. 12mo.
